Emissions Calculator for The Energy You Use

Curious about your carbon footprint from using electricity supplied by Idaho Power? Use our emissions calculator or perform your own calculations with the emissions factors provided below.

This calculator is a subpage of the Emissions Information about Energy Delivered to Customers webpage, which has more context about the energy delivered to customers, emissions factors, and details and examples of how to use this calculator or perform your own calculation.

To calculate your carbon footprint from the energy you use from Idaho Power, follow these steps:

  1. In the “Total annual kWh used” field below, enter your total energy used from Idaho Power during the last calendar year or within the last 12 months. (Many customers can access their energy use history through the My Account portal. Commercial and Industrial customers can utilize the Large Business Portal or reach out to their energy advisor.)

  2. In the “kWh from zero-emissions renewable energy” field below, enter the following:

    1. If you do not purchase zero-emissions renewable energy by participating in Clean Energy Your Way or a similar voluntary option, enter 0.
    2. If you do purchase zero-emissions renewable energy by participating in Clean Energy Your Way or a similar voluntary option, enter the total annual amount of kWh from renewable energy.

Some renewable sources, such as biofuels, have emissions. If you use a renewable fuel that has associated emissions, ensure you include the proper emissions for that amount of energy. All renewable sources through Idaho Power’s Clean Energy Your Way program are zero-emissions for Scope 2 electricity use reporting.

  3. Click Calculate.

See FAQs on the main page for examples of how to use the calculator.

Your annual carbon footprint (also called Scope 2 emissions) from using Idaho Power-supplied electricity is…

  • metric tons (or pounds) of CO2e using the Location-Based calculation method.
  • metric tons (or pounds) of CO2e using the Market-Based calculation method.

For an explanation of Location-Based versus Market-Based, see the FAQs. Emissions factors are updated annually by July 1.

Emissions factors used in the calculator:

Location-Based energy-use emissions factor: Metric Tons CO2e per kWh

Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's eGRID for WECC Northwest Subregion Total Output Emission Rates (eGRID2022, created 1/30/2024).

Market-Based energy-use emissions factor: Metric Tons CO2e per kWh

Source: Idaho Power's 2023 energy supply and sales data. The methodology is based on Idaho Power's interpretation of the guidance from Edison Electric Institute's protocol on utility-specific residual mix emissions. See the FAQs for more information on the calculation methodology, data sources, and examples of how to perform your own calculation using the factors provided.
